This sandstone stone building may have been constructed as early as 1867 as an advertisement appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald stating that:
“This spacious lodge, recently built, is replete with every convenience for families or persons desirous of change of air. It is situated at an elevation of about 2000 feet, and commands one of the most delightful and extensive views to be seen in the colony.” Advertisements for the “private boarding establishment” operated by C Donnelly described the lodge as a “handsome and commodious residence.”

By December 1871, Mrs J Kennedy had taken over the operation of the lodge. While living at this location, Mrs Kennedy gave birth to a number of children with several notices appearing in the newspapers of the time.
In February 1876, Belmore lodge was advertised for auction sale by The City Auction Company, Sydney. Published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 2 February the notice described the land surrounding the building amounting to over 18 acres and “easily subdivided into three parts, each having suflicient room for separate residences, without detracting from the present building.” In March the same year the lodge was again operating as a boarding establishment.
In September 1882 the building was offered for sale by Richardson and Wrench and was described as “a well-finished stone built Residence with 12 1/2 acres of Ground, beautifully situated, lately occupied as the Parsonage.” In 1884 the lodge was opened by a Miss Sweet as an “educational establishment for young ladies” but the following year was available for lease either furnished or unfurnished.
