The Muncipality of Castlereagh was proclaimed in 1895 and was amalgamated with Penrith Council in 1949.
‘Someone has evidently been walking off with all the portable furniture in the Castlereagh Council Chambers without permission, and the matter proved to be the subject of a lengthy discussion at last Council meeting. One alderman said people would take the big table but only they couldn’t get it through the door, and another said people came into the hall without a ‘key’, held dances, and then went and paid for the use of the hall. The Mayor (Ald J W Devlin) commented strongly upon the offence of someone breaking in and removing the furniture. The seats would be the next to go, and he reminded them that, by motion of the Council, a reward of £5 be awarded for information convicting anyone of tampering with the hall or property. We certainly think the Council is responsible to a certain extent through negligence in allowing people to use the building at any time they liked.’
