East of Brooklyn, named Mullet Island by Governor Phillip whose party camped there in March 1788 and netted many fish. The 75 acres island was purchased in 1864 by Henry Carey Dangar who built a fine home. The current name appears on an 1872 Admiralty chart but the island was not officially renamed until 1922. Dangar was a pastoralist and member of parliament for West Sydney then East Sydney. The island was subdivided for home sites in 1921.
JAMES ‘BIG JIM’ STANBURY (1868-1945) was the first recorded person born on Dangar Island (then known as Mullet Island) on 25th February 1868. He went on to become 4 times world champion in single sculls rowing.
