Hawkesbury People & Places The weatherboard cottage known as “Dawnford” is located at 396 George Street, Windsor, New South Wales near the Windsor Railway Station and next door to the two-storey sandstone shop constructed in 1895 by George Robertson. Excerpt from the Town of Windsor map 1967 showing Section K and Lot 73 ascribed to J L C Callaway The land is described as Portion 73 of Section K of the Town of Windsor. The first to hold title to the land was Samuel Lacon Childe Callaway who gained the grant in July 1842. The son of Joseph Callaway and Mary Ann Lacon, Samuel was born about 1801. He died in 1852 and was buried at the Weslyan Cemetery, McGraths Hill. His estate passed to his widow, Ellen (nee Wall) for her lifetime. Samuel and Ellen had married at St Matthew’s Church of England, Windsor in 1830. In 1888, five years after Ellen’s death, the property was sold to Thomas Primrose, however in 1900, Samuel and Ellen’s son, William Joseph born in Windsor in 1840 mounted a successful claim against Primrose as the rightful title holder to the property under the terms of the will of his father Samuel and accordingly Primrose paid William Joseph £100 for the block. It then passed through several owners including the infamous “Rev” Bernard Keenan until his death in 1912. The house is late Victorian in style and was possibly built by Thomas Primrose in the 1890s.
