Hawkesbury People & Places Howes Valley Public School was once located on Portions 6 and 20, Parish of Burton, County of Northumberland. This location, number 5484 Putty Road, Howes Valley, New South Wales is now the Howes Valley Reserve and home to the Howes Valley Rural Fire Brigade shed. Portion 6 amounting to 2 acres was dedicated for the public school on 1 July 1873 and on 5 November 1887 an additional 5 acres was added to the school site. In October 1885 the NSW government advertised in the Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser for the submission of tenders for the provision of a timber building for the school. According to the newspaper report of the following week, the structure being used for the school on a temporary basis was is a very poor state of repair. At least forty children were being “huddled together in such a miserable shanty” according to the report. By February 1886, the tender submitted by Mr David Gardiner had been accepted by the Minister of Public Instruction. After being closed for a period of time the school re-opened in 1934, however falling attendance numbers resulted in its permanent closure in 1936. Excerpt from the the Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, 17 October 1885, p. 1. Howes Valley Public School operated as a provisional school from October 1872 until 1880, then as a public school from 1880 until May 1895, then as a half-time school with Springfield (Putty) from June 1895 until July 1907, and again as a provisional school from January 1910 until closure in March 1936.
