Hawkesbury People & Places Joseph Street is a road in the town of Richmond, New South Wales. It runs in a south-easterly direction from Moray Street to Bourke Street. In April 1888 the NSW Government Gazette published the notice that several unnamed streets had been named by the Richmond Borough Council. Joseph Street was named for one of the two Joseph Onuses who served on council at this time. One was Joseph Onus (1818-1895) who married Emma Powell in 1837 and was a founding member of council from its inception in 1872, serving as alderman, including two terms as mayor in 1873 and 1875. The other was then Mayor Joseph Edward Onus born 1840, son of Joseph Onus and Emma Powell, who also took an active role in community affairs and was mayor of Richmond from 1881 to 1885 and again from 1887 until he died in office in 1891. It is not clear after which of the two Joseph Onuses the street was named. Please make your comment below.
