Hawkesbury People & Places The house known as Learholm is located at 393 George Street, Windsor, New South Wales. The original property amounting to just over 2 acres and described as Portion 65 of Section D of the Town of Windsor, Parish of St Matthew, County of Cumberland was granted to Richard Coley on 5 April 1865. Coley was a solicitor who commenced practice in Windsor in 1848. He was also a leading member of the Freemasonry organisation and the local Masonic Lodge is named after him. Coley owned several portions of land in NSW and Queensland and the land in George Street, Windsor was sold to Susannah Hopkins in April 1878 and in December 1880 part of the block which included the Railway Hotel located on the corner of Brabyn Street was sold to Thomas Matthew Masters. Excerpt showing the land on the corner of Brabyn, George and Richmond Road (now Hawkesbury Valley Way) from the Town of Windsor and Adjoining Lands, Parish of St Matthew, County of Cumberland, 4th Edition, September 1967 The residue of the land was then sold by Hopkins to William Norris. The property was included in Norris’ assets when his case came before the Insolvency Court as he had defaulted on his mortgage repayments. Details of the hearing were reported in the Sydney Morning Heraldon 7 November 1882. During the hearing, the property was described as “consisting of land with houses on them; there was a public-house, two cottages, and a vacant piece of land; this property was in George-street, Windsor”. Several years later the land was subdivided into residential lots under DP1093. After changing hands several times after 1882, the vacant site consisting of Lots 8 and 9 were purchased by Mr Aquilla Haggar in April 1895. The building of Haggar’s cottage was noted in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette on several occasions. In August 1895 the newspaper reported that “Mr Haggar’s new cottage, near Mr Geo. Robertson’s, in George-Street, presents quite a picturesque appearance”. It hasn’t been discovered when the cottage gained the appellation ‘Learholm’ or by whom it was named.
