Hawkesbury People & Places Over the past 110 years there have been three community halls servicing the Bilpin district. The second community hall known as the Bilpin Memorial Hall was constructed by the men of Mt. Tomah and Bilpin districts to replace the earlier Bilpin Mechanics Institute or School of Arts which had become too small to accommodate community functions. The Windsor and Richmond Gazette reported on the official opening of the building in December 1948 by ‘pioneer of the district’ Mr A. B. Powell. The Bilpin Women’s Band had made a substantial donation to the construction costs including the inerior and exterior painting. The celebrations included a children’s concert with Father Christmas and a gala dance was held several days later. Land was set aside for the building of a Mechanics Institute or School of Arts in Bilpin in May 1909. The block was located on the south-eastern boundary of the Travelling Stock Reserve which was notified on 15 August 1883. Adjacent to Memorial Hall, land was reserved in 1929 for the construction of Bilpin Public School. At this time the route of Bells Line of Road was on the south side of the blocks of land, this road is now known as Bilpin School Road. The Memorial Hall site became part of the school grounds in the 1960s. On 5 June 1953, the hall was the venue for the Official Ceremony of the Switching on of Electric Supply in the Bilpin Area. THe electricity was supplied by the Hawkesbury Development Company Ltd and the function was organised by the directors of the company in conjunction with Colo Shire Council and the Bilpin District Progress Association. Records of Theatres and Public Halls are held by State Archives and Records www.records.nsw.gov.au for Bilpin Memorial Hall from 1/1/1947 to 31/12/1965. The Bilpin District Hall, the third community hall in the district, which was built further west along Bells Line of Road opened in 1967 and is currently the local venue for functions, meeting and regular market days.
