Grose to Dundas, 29 April 1794. Lieutenant Governor Francis Grose called the district near the present Pitt Town on which he settled the first 22 settlers ‘Mulgrave Place’ in honour of his friend Lord Mulgrave whose patronage he had enjoyed in England.
In 1794 Henry Phipps (younger brother of the second Baron Mulgrave Constantine John Phipps)was made the third Baron Mulgrave, of Mulgrave in the County of York in the Peerage of Great Britain and was able to enter the House of Lords in British Parliament. In 1812 the 3rd Baron Mulgrave was further honoured when he was made Earl of Mulgrave in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
