Hawkesbury People & Places The Young Mens Mutual Improvement Society (or Association) which was an association of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints was formed in the USA in 1875 under the guidance of church President, Brigham Young. The purpose of this association was to “help young men develop their gifts, to stand up and speak, and to bear testimony”. There was a female equivalent known as the Young Ladies National Mutual Improvement Association. The usual weekly meeting of the North Richmond Y M M I Society was held on Monday evening when the attendance was good. The debate set down for the evening was ‘Should black labor in federated Australia be abolished’. Mr Arthur Wheeler opened the debate affirming that it was immoral. After all the members had spoken a vote was taken which resulted in a win for Mr Wheeler’s side by 10 to 8. Owing to next Monday being a holiday, the usual meeting will lapse, but on the 15th inst the question of ’total abstinence’ will be discussed.
