Hawkesbury People & Places Peats Ferry is the locality around Kangaroo Point and the western end of Sandbrook Inlet. George Peat established a ferry service across the Hawkesbury between Kangaroo Point and Peats Point (now Mooney Mooney Point) in 1844. The name persisted at least until the end of the nineteenth century. An experience of using the punt in 1881 was described vividly by W.B. Christie, ’the punt at Peates Ferry [sic.] is a very primitive affair, consisting simply of a broad flat box capable of carrying three horses, but there is so much appearance of danger in it, that once the horse gets safely aboard, his fear will cause him to stand still while being towed across by men in a boat in front. If he suddenly threw all his weight on one side, it would assuredly fill and sink, and the sharks which are numerous in the locality, would have a jolly time of it.' Please make your comment below.
