Named by Governor Arthur Phillip in July 1789 near the termination of his journey by boat up the Hawkesbury River. Land grant known as ‘Belmont’ made to Lieut. Archibald Bell by Acting Governor Col. George Johnston in 1808. Named after the Duke of Richmond, Master-General of the Ordinance, 1788.
Governor Phillip, accompanied by Captains Hunter, Collins, George Johnston and Surgeon White reached the foot of Richmond Hill on 5th July 1789 during the second expedition to explore the Hawkesbury River.
