Operated as a national school from July 1860 until 1881, then as a special public school from 1881 until 1912, as a public school from 1912 until December 1924, then as a district rural school from January 1925 until December 1954 and again as a public school from January 1955 until the present.
The school was first located adjacent to the School of Arts in West Market Street, Richmond then moved to present site in Windsor Street in 1926.

Plans have been submitted to Council for the construction of a new school building at Richmond.
Minister for Education opens new Rural School at Richmond. The cost of construction was £11,395.
