Named after Viscount Sackville.
Probably named to honour George Sackville Germain, first Viscount Sackville (1716-1785). He followed a military career and in 1758 became C-in-C of British forces on the Lower Rhine. In 1759, at the battle of Minden, he was tardy in bringing forward the cavalry and was dismissed from the service. His reputation was later restored and he became commissioner of trade and plantations (1775- 1782).
