Hawkesbury People & Places The School of Arts in Pitt Town, New South Wales was opened on Saturday the 26 January 1918. In the edition of the 1 February the Windsor and Richmond Gazette published an account of the celebrations. Located at 28 Bathurst Street, Pitt Town the community hall stood until 1977 when it was demolished. For many years it was the centre of community events such as dances in aid of the local hospital, birthday and anniversary parties and card nights. OPENING OF THE SCHOOL OF ARTS. Friday and Saturday last will be red-letter days in the history of Pitt Town, for it was carnival time there. To celebrate the completion of a School of Arts that has just been built in the pretty little village, a banquet and ball were held on Friday, and a day’s sports, with a cricket match, on Saturday. A few months ago, when a few of the public-spirited people of Pitt Town decided to build a School of Arts, Ald S [Samuel] Cox at once came to their assistance and in his usual generous way, offered them a block of land with a frontage to the main street. This was readily accepted, and an allotment of a little over a quarter of an acre was alienated from Mr Cox’s paddock near his home, and presented to the trustees, the title deeds were, executed in the office of Mr R B Walker M L A, free of cost. The trustees appointed were: Messrs S A Mawson, W Gillespie, George Cox, G M Greenwell, James Wilbow jnr, Lloyd Paul, James Brown, W Huxley, S N Dunstan, with Mr G M Greenwell appointed honorary secretary. In 1922, a plaque mounted on the wall of the building was unveiled to commemorate those from the district who served in World War One. Following the demolition of the hall, the plaque was installed in the foyer of the Pitt Town and District Sports Club. Pitt Town and District Sports Club.
