Hawkesbury People & Places The Schoolmaster’s House is located at 1108 Grose Vale Rd Kurrajong, New South Wales. The cottage was the home of schoolmaster Francis James Shipp and his family from 1930 until 1951. The land was originally part of a grant (Portion 102, Parish of Kurrajong County of Cook) of 500 acres to William Lawson on 1 January 1810. The acreage block was subdivided into several smaller parcels until the part of the property along Grose Vale Road in Kurrajong Village measured about 3 acres. In 1927 under the ownership of Henry Tate and John Hugh Drummond the land was cut into house blocks. One of the blocks was purchased by Francis Henry Shipp in May 1930 when he was appointed teacher-in-charge of the public school at Kurrajong. The house probably dates from this time. Shipp and his wife and children were previously living at Delegate in southern NSW where he was a popular teacher. He was originally from the Wollongong area, son of James and Margaret Shipp and taught at several NSW schools before coming to Kurrajong. In March 1951 Shipp sold the house to Dorothy May Foote. Francis’ wife, Susannah (nee Hay) Shipp passed away on 29 June 1959 aged 72 years and Francis James on 11 June 1978 aged 91 years. See entry in Australian Cemeteries Index for further details.
