The cemetery contains the remains of Joseph Smith (22 June 1856, aged 83 years) and his wife Margaret, nee Holmes (20 September 1850, aged 76 years). Alongside the couple lies the grave of their great-grandson, William Duncomb, son of Henry Archibald Duncomb and Margaret Mary Baker, he died 25 May 1854 aged 5 days. Courtesy of Sylvia van der Straaten Joseph Smith arrived in the colony of NSW in 1790 aboard the convict transport Neptune in the Second Fleet. Margaret Holmes arrived on the Third Fleet convict transport, Mary Ann in 1791. Joseph and Margaret were successful farmers and amassing large holdings in the Macdonald Valley district. Caroline Chisholm visited the Smith’s property on the 3 October 1845 and interviewed Joseph and Margaret regarding their experiences in the early years of the colony. Joseph expressed his anger and resentment at the treatment and conditions endured by the convicts at that time. Information plaque detailing the family history of Joseph and Margaret Smith.
