Hawkesbury People & Places Located at 315 Windsor Street, Richmond, New South Wales, The Cottage was the home of Joseph Onus jnr and his second wife Clara Hunt who married in 1867 spent the latter years of their lives there. In later years, it was also the home of Arthur Cornwell. Joseph (jnr) first married Emma Powell in 1837. He was very active in town affairs being a founding member of Richmond Borough Council from its inception in 1872, serving as alderman for over fifty years and two terms as mayor in 1873 and 1875. He was a staunch member of the congregation of St Peters Church of England, Richmond. The beautiful stained glass window above the altar was presented by this Joseph Onus in commemoration of the jubilee of the consecration of the church in 1891. Joseph (jnr) was a member of the Hawkesbury Race Club, Richmond Road Trust and the Hawkesbury District Agricultural Association. Funeral procession to leave his house, ‘The Cottage’ Windsor Street, Richmond for St Peter’s Cemetery. The deceased was a member of the Richmond Road Trust, Hawkesbury District Agricultural Association, Hawkesbury Race Club, Mayor of Richmond on two occasions and alderman for over 50 years. He donated the Onus Window to St Peter’s Church and was also one of the best landlords in the district.
