Hawkesbury People & Places Timms Hill Road is a street in the village of Kurrajong, New South Wales. Timms Hill Road may have been named after Kurrajong residents, Flora Ann McLean and her husband Joseph Charles Timms. Flora Timms of Kurrajong was one of the few women who made regular contributions to the local press. She was born Flora McLean in the Southern Highlands of NSW and married Joseph Charles Timms in Berry in 1898. Their four children Flora, Charlotte, Jessie and Joseph were all born in Berry. Joseph was also the first Shire Engineer of the Gunning Shire, New South Wales where they lived for eighteen years from 1907. After moving to Wilberforce in about 1924, Joseph served as the Shire President of Colo Shire for many years from July 1925. Flora was elected the first president of the Wilberforce branch of the Country Women’s Association. The couple moved to Kurrajong in 1935 and Flora again immersed herself in community life of the village being active in the Kurrajong Debating Society and the local branch of the Red Cross during World War Two. Timms was known in the district for her writing abilities and her work first appeared in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette in December 1925 on the topic of the Rev Robert Cartwright (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/85899861). Her subjects were many and varied from the history of the Jewish peoples in the Old Testament times which ran to thirty-one instalments to boat builder John Grono and Captain Thomas Christie of Lower Portland. Reminiscences of the celebrations on the opening of the Windsor Bridge may be of particular interest at this time and was published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette on the 5 May 1939 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/85811033) A final article by this prolific writer appeared in October 1940. Flora Timms died at her home ‘Druwalla’, Kurrajong, on 14 September, 1945 at the age of 77 years.
