Hawkesbury People & Places Situated at 439 Cattai Road, Cattai, adjacent to Cattai Public School. The property located at Portion 258 Parish of Pitt Town, County of Cumberland was part of a reserve for travelling stock until 1907 when it became available for lease as grazing land. Then later the NSW Department of Lands released the block for Conditonal Purchase in 1916. Mr A J Browne of Sydney had the stone house constructed in 1912 as his country residence. He called his property ‘The Ranche’ and he bred various stock including Clydesdale horses and dairy cattle. Browne owned the property until at least the early 1950s. Listed as an item of significance. The property of 91 acres (Portion 258) of the Water and Camping Reserve will be made available for Conditional Purchase Lease at £5 per acre. Department of Lands,

CONDITIONAL PURCHASE LEASE AREA.
IT is hereby notified, for public information, that an area of 91 acres, being portion 258, parish of Pitt Town, county of Cumberland, about 8 miles from Windsor, will be open for application for Conditional Purchase Lease on and after the 14th March 1907, in one Block. Applications may be lodged by the applicant in person, or by his agent in person duly authorised in writing, or may be forwarded in a posted letter to the Land Agent, but so as not to be received by him before the 14th March 1907 The annual rent (at 2 per cent for the first ten years) is £1/7/6, and the survey is £5/5/0. Full particulars as to special conditionals, etc., were published in the Government Gazette of the 9th January 1907, and may also be obtained from the Information Bureau, Department of Lands, Sydney, or the Crown Lands Agent at Windsor.

Acting Under Secretary Mr E. Mellish is just finishing the carpentering work of a stone house at Cattai, which Mr A. J. Brown, of Sydney, has had erected. Mr A. Arnold did the stone work.
