Hawkesbury People & Places The Wilberforce Uniting Church, formerly the Methodist Church was located on the corner of David Street and Wilberforce Road, Wilberforce, New South Wales. The church was constructed in 1862 and demolished in 1984. Reputedly, the 1867 flood, the highest ever recorded, reached the window sill of the church and a mark on the facade showed the height of the water level reached after the flood had subsided. The church Hall which was opened in September 1960 beside the church still remains on the site. The Windsor and Richmond Gazette reported on the opening ceremony during which: The trust secretary, Mr. A. F. Cutts, handed the front door key to the Chairman of the District with these words:— “We present unto you this building to be dedicated to the glory of God and to the purpose of Christian education, fellowship, study and service.” Opening the door, the Rev. W. Tredinnick invited the congregation to enter. Excerpt from the Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 14 September 1960, p. 20. New Sunday School. There were over 100 people present and the new building was filled to overflowing. The hall was constructed by converting an “Air Force hut which they have had renovated and re-fronted and provided with a kitchen, which serves also as a kindergarten room”.
